The age old question is whether Samsung or Apple is dominating the market. Well, according to data from IDC which compared smartphone market share last year, Samsung had a significantly larger sales volume compared to Apple and other smartphone makers.

Samsung's success in the Malaysian market was due to the popularity of their budget focused Galaxy J series that stood up despite problems that the company had with the Galaxy Note7. Other companies like Oppo, Huawei and Asus continue to thrive in the Malaysian market with their affordable flagship devices like the Oppo F1, Huawei P9 and ZenFone 3.

IDC estimates that there were over 2.7 million smartphone shipments in Malaysia during Q4 2016 and that rounds up to about 8.8 million shipments in the whole of 2016.

Once again, the Galaxy A series is being refreshed with improved aesthetics and features from flagship phones. In addition to that, Samsung has also included features like a USB Type-C port, better software experience, an always on display powered by the AMOLED display, IP68 water and dust resistance and also Samsung Pay. The addition of Samsung Pay is a big one as Samsung will continue expanding their mobile payment service this year and having more devices support it will help it's growth.

After two months in the market, today Samsung is officially discontinuing the Galaxy Note7 due to the battery issues that having been causing dozens of explosions. The Galaxy Note7 was originally unveiled back in August and while Samsung Malaysia didn't formerly launch the Note7 in Malaysia, they did sell a limited amount of units to Malaysian consumers.

Read more: My experience with the Samsung Galaxy Note7
Initially, Samsung tried to remedy the situation by switching battery suppliers and recalling all original Note7's sold and replacing them with 'safe' units. But that clearly did not help the situation as last week, reports started surfacing that some replacement Note7 units are still exploding despite Samsung and CPSC affirming that the new units are safe to use.

Similar to other markets that have seen the launch of the Galaxy Note7, Samsung Malaysia is recommending that Galaxy Note7 users power down their Note7's and head over to a Samsung Store for an exchange with the Galaxy S7 edge or a full refund.

Official statement from Samsung Malaysia

SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE7 PRE-ORDER OWNERS TO GET FULL REFUND OR EXCHANGE TO ANOTHER SAMSUNG DEVICE

With the recent reported cases involving the Samsung Galaxy Note7, Samsung Malaysia Electronics (SME) Sdn Bhd urges all pre-order owners of Samsung Galaxy Note7 to power off their devices immediately. Pursuant thereto, the option of refund or exchange to the Samsung Galaxy S7edge will be made available for the pre-order owners provided that they return their current Samsung Galaxy Note7 accordingly.

The preorder owners will expect to be contacted from 13th October 2016 onwards by Samsung Customer Service, related mobile network operators or participating retail
partners respectively on the details of the refund or exchange program.

For further inquiries, kindly contact Samsung Malaysia Careline at 1-800-88-7799. We apologise for any inconveniences caused.

Samsung is ready to step into the enthusiast PC market with the introduction of their new desktop PC. The new Samsung ArtPC Pulse features a cylindrical design reminiscent of Apple's Mac Pro and unlike Apple's trashcan design, Samsung's one looks like an air purifier. There is a reason behind the odd design and that is because the ArtPC Pulse comes with Harmon Kardon speakers that blasts audio in every direction.

Samsung ArtPC Pulse Key Specifications

— Intel Core i5/i7 (Skylake)
— 8/16GB DDR4 memory
— AMD Radeon RX 460 graphics
— 1TB HDD/256GB NVMe SSD
— USB 3.1 ports
— 139.7 x 139.7 x 271.8mm
— 3.4kg
— Windows 10

In addition to that, Samsung is also putting 256GB NVMe SSDs on every ArtPC Pulse and the PC itself will feature 5 USB USB 3.1ports one of which is in the USB Type-C form. There's also a AMD Radeon GPU included in the package but overall, Samsung's ArtPC Pulse is not as powerful as other cylindrical PCs currently available in the market but it is a uniquely different with it's 360 degree speakers.

Samsung will begin shipping the ArtPC Pulse in the United States beginning October 28 for US$ 1,200 (~MYR 5,000) and US$ 1,600 (~MYR 6,700) for the i5 and i7 models respectively.

About a year ago, Samsung showed off their record breaking 950 Pro NVMe SSD and today, the company is breaking barriers yet again by introducing their new 960 series NVMe SSDs which can clock up to 3,500 MB/s read speeds. This time around, Samsung is topping up their M.2 based SSD with up to 2TB of storage which is the highest density NVMe SSD in this form factor.

Samsung 960 Evo Key Specifications

— Samsung Polaris controller
— 250GB / 500GB / 1TB
— M.2 form factor
— PCIe 3.0 x4

— M.2 form factor
— PCIe 3.0 x4
— 48-layer MLC V-NAND

— 2,100 MB/s seq write

All of this is thanks to Samsung's industry leading V-NAND technology which enables them to push the boundaries in terms of speed and storage in small form factor. In addition to that, these SSDs also come with Samsung's new Dynamic Thermal Guard technology that will manage the performance of the drive during heavy loads.

Samsung will begin offering both the 960 Pro and 960 Evo NVMe SSDs in October 2016. The higher end Samsung 960 Pro SSD will retail at US$ 329.99 (~MYR 1,300) for the 512GB model and goes up to US$ 1,299 (~MYR 5,300) for the largest 2TB model. It has been a while since Samsung released a tablet and today the company is showing off the Galaxy Tab A  in their home country of South Korea. This new tablet is by no means impressive in any sense but it does throw in the power of Samsung's S Pen with an LTE enabled tablet.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A (2016) Key Specifications

— 10.1-inch 1200P display
— Exynos 7870 SoC
— 3GB RAM
— 32GB expandable memory
— 8MP rear camera
— 2MP front camera
— 7,300mAh battery
— Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Compared to the design of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Note7, the new 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab A only features a sub-par design. At K₩ 480,900 (~US$ 430 / ~MYR 1,800), you're basically paying for the S Pen functionality on this new tablet as it comes with the same S Pen software enhancements that came with the Galaxy Note7.

Right now, the Galaxy Tab A (2016) is only available in South Korea but it is expected to be released to other regions in the coming months.

Over the last weekend, reports started to trickle out as Galaxy Note7's are exploding. After a thorough investigation, Samsung Mobile has came to a conclusion that the problem with the explosion is due to the battery cell. As of today, Samsung has been informed of 35 cases of Galaxy Note7 explosions and according to Samsung's investigation, out of 1 million Galaxy Note7's, only 24 are affected with this battery issue.

Additionally, Samsung has halted the sales of the Galaxy Note7 globally due to safety hazards. In the coming weeks, Samsung will then begin a voluntary recall of the Galaxy Note7 whether affected or unaffected with the battery explosion issue to ensure that customers are please with Samsung's product.

Just last month, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note7 and today at their IFA 2016 event, Samsung is showing off their third generation Tizen based smartwatch which will support Android phones running Android 4.4 and above (and iPhones in the near future) The biggest change that the Gear S3 is bringing to the table compared to last year's Gear S2 is a bigger display that is covered by Corning's new Gorilla Glass SR. Samsung is baking in a full color always on display with the Gear S3.

Like last year, Samsung's new Gear S3 series will have two variants, the Gear S3 Frontier and Gear S3 Classic. The biggest difference between the two is that the Gear S3 Frontier features LTE and a more aggressive industrial look. Both versions feature MST and NFC which enables Samsung Pay transactions and they are also IP68 water resistant. Samsung is also adding a microphone and speaker to execute various commands.

But that's not all, the company says that they have done extensive research in designing the Gear S3 and the Gear S3 Frontier is the result of the research. Additionally, Samsung has also collaborated with designers Yvan Arpa and Arik Levy to design straps and watch faces for the Gear S3.

In terms of the actual functionality of the Gear S3, the device itself will count health data like calories and sleep but it will now also track GPS data. Also, Samsung says that they have tuned the software to improve battery life and the Gear S3 will last up to 4 days on a single charge. Things like the rotating bezel and wireless charging is still present.

Right now, Samsung isn't talking about pricing but they are quoting that the Gear S3 will be available beginning October 2016. And given that Samsung is planning to continue offering the Gear S2, expect the Gear S3 to be priced higher than the current Gear S2 models.

Samsung Gear S3 Frontier Key Specifications

— 1.3-inch 360 x 360 Super AMOLED display
— Dual core 1.0GHz processor
— 768MB RAM
— 4GB memory

As expected, during a launch event in NYC this morning, Samsung unveiled their latest flagship android smartphone. The Galaxy Note7 as it is called is the successor to last year's Galaxy Note5 and similar to what Samsung did with the Galaxy S7 earlier this year, the new Note7 is visually similar to last year's Note5.

Most of the changes that Samsung is introducing with the Note7 is under the hood. With the Note7, Samsung is keeping the 5.7-inch display size but introducing the dual curved display as a standard on the Note7. This new curved display enabled Samsung to make the Note7 a little bit lighter and thinner while increasing the battery capacity from 3,000mAh to 3,500mAh.

Additionally, Samsung is also bringing both the IP68 water and dust certification and USB Type C port from the Galaxy S7 to the Galaxy Note7.

Samsung Galaxy Note7 Key Specifications:

— 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 sAMOLED display
— 64-bit octa core Exynos 8893 or Snapdragon 820 SoC
— 4GB RAM
— 64GB expandable memory
— 12MP f1.7 Dual pixel rear camera with OIS
— 5MP f1.7 front camera
— IP68 certification
— 3,500mAh battery with wireless charging
— 153.5 x 73.9 x 7.9gmm (168g)
— LTE
— Black Onyx, Silver Titanium, Blue Coral, Gold
Beyond the similar overall design, the Note7 is in a lot of ways like the Galaxy Note5 in terms of design. The aluminium frame and colored glass design is still present here and for the Note7, Samsung is introducing a new Blue Coral color that combines a light shade of blue with a gold theme.

In terms of hardware, the new Note7 comes with the best of Samsung and Qualcomm depending on the region and for the first time, Samsung is making 64GB of internal storage a standard. When compared to last year's Note5, the Note7 gains a new microSD card slot that accepts up to 256GB microSD cards.

Moving on to the camera, the Note7 inherits the one from the Galaxy S7 so expect to see the camera perform well in real life performance. On the front, the 5MP camera with dual pixel technology is also inherited from the Galaxy S7 but Samsung is introducing a new software feature that allows you to unlock your phones with your eyes.

This new iris scanning technology will not only allow Galaxy Note7 users to unlock their phone with just their eyes but this feature is secure enough to authenticate encrypted information and also to confirm Samsung Pay transactions. Of course, the fingerprint scanning home button is still available on the Note7.
And finally, the feature that differentiates the Galaxy Note7 with the Galaxy S7 edge is Samsung's S Pen. This year, Samsung is improving the S Pen by doubling the pressure sensitivity from 2048 to 4096 levels of pressure. What this means is that you can expect more precise strokes when using the S Pen on the Note7.

The new features of the S Pen on the Note7 include a magnifier which magnifies the text when you hover the S Pen over, a GIF maker through smart select and a translator that automatically translate a foreign text when you hover the S Pen over it. All these features sound cool bur the best one has go to be Samsung's claim that the S Pen will work underwater.

Samsung will begin offering the Galaxy Note7 globally on August 19 and they will be accepting pre-orders as early as August 3. For Malaysia, Samsung Malaysia will be accepting pre-orders for the Galaxy Note7 from 8-10 August and only 4,000 units are up for grabs. The Galaxy Note7 will be officially available in Malaysia on August 19th and is priced at RM 3,199.

Malaysia will getting the Dual SIM LTE model and only the black, gold and silver Note7 are up for grabs. Learn more about all the features that the Galaxy Note7 has to offer here

It was just a couple week ago that Samsung showed off their fastest 256GB microSD card and today, the Korean company is showing off the world's first UFS cards. UFS or better known as Universal Flash Storage is the next generation of removable storage and is bound to replace microSD cards in the future.

Besides the slightly different pin layout which makes UFS cards not compatible with microSD card slots, UFS cards are designed to be as fast as SSDs. Samsung's first wave of UFS cards that they are announcing today features a random read rate of 40,000 IOPS and has a sequential write speed of 530MB/s which is up to 5 times faster than current microSD cards.

To put things to perspective, Samsung's UFS card can read a 5GB Full-HD movie in just 10 seconds. A high-end microSD card with 95MB/s will need 50 seconds to complete the same task.

These new Samsung UFS cards are the fast and small but there isn't any devices that currently support UFS cards. However, Samsung is promising that upcoming DSLRs, 3D VR cameras, drones, smartphones, tablets and electronic devices will be compatible with UFS cards. These first wave of Samsung UFS cards will come in 32, 64, 128 and 256GB options and expect to see more UFS cards being announced in the coming weeks.

Samsung and LG have famously shown off bendable screens in the past but none of them have actually talked about them extensively since then. But it looks like Lenovo is ahead of the possible trend as they have just revealed that they are working on devices with flexible displays. This news comes after multiple reports stating that Samsung will be releasing a flexible smartphone in 2017

Lenovo's prototype / concept of a flexible display is actually pretty feasible as it is supported by hinges. Something that Lenovo has been heavily investing. While Lenovo did show off an actual hardware product today, the company says that their prototype is still not fully functional but expect to see Lenovo release an actual phone/tablet that can bend in the next year or so.

Samsung has been making 'active' variants of their flagship phones for AT&T since the Galaxy S4 launched and it comes to no surprise that AT&T is announcing the Galaxy S7 Active. What's special this year is that AT&T is naming the Galaxy S7 Active the 'Toughest Galaxy Device Ever' and that claim is backed up by a MIL-STD-810G certification that promises to protect the device from salt, dust, humidity, rain, vibration, solar radiation, transport and thermal shock.

While the Galaxy S7 Active doesn't come with a fancy curved display, Samsung did include a new shatterproof display atop of the Gorilla Glass 4 to enable the device to withstand drops of up to 5 feet. Similar to last year's Galaxy S6 Active, the new Galaxy S7 Active also comes with an additional button on the left side that can be configured to do specific tasks.

Furthermore, Samsung improved upon last year's model by including a fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S7 Active which will work with Samsung Pay. But beyond the polycarbonate in place of the glass on the regular Galaxy S7, the Galaxy S7 Active is very much identical to the former in terms of internals.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Active Key Specifications:

— 5.1-inch 2560 x 1440 sAMOLED display
— Snapdragon 820 SoC
— 4GB RAM
— 32G/64GB expandable memory
— 12MP f1.7 Dual pixel rear camera with OIS
— 5MP f1.7 front camera
— IP68 + MIL-SDT-810G certification
— 4,000mAh battery with wireless charging
— LTE
— 142.4 x 69.6 x 9.9mm (185g)
— Fingerprint scanner with Samsung Pay
—  Camo Green, Titanium Gray, Sandy Gold

You'll still enjoy the power of the Snapdragon 820 SoC alongside the industry leading 12MP rear camera but the battery is still not replaceable. The good news is that Samsung did bump up the battery size from 3,000mAh to 4,000mAh and the Galaxy S7 Active will still support Wireless Charging and Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 technology.

Samsung's Galaxy S7 Active will be exclusive to AT&T and the carrier will begin offering the device starting this Friday (June 10) for US$ 750 or as low as $26.50 on AT&T's Next plan.

Alongside the Gear Fit 2 announcement, Samsung also took the opportunity to show off their latest invention called the Gear IconX. These new wireless earbuds that are capable of storing up to 1,000 MP3 files and is capable of working as a standalone device without the need to be actively paired with a smartphone.

The big twist is that these earbuds that weigh just 6 grams can not only stream music wirelessly but Samsung has also included a couple of sensors inside the earbuds that enable the Gear IconX to log fitness data like the distance travelled, how many calories you burnt and also your heart rate. Samsung is also including a software feature called Voice Guide that acts as a personal trainer by providing instant voice feedback based on your workout.

Samsung Gear IconX Key Specifications

— Dynamic driver
— 4GB memory
— Bluetooth 4.1
— 47mAh battery
— 18.9 x 26mm
— 6.3g
— Black, White, Blue

The Gear IconX will work with Android devices running Android 4.4 and above with at least 1.5GB RAM. When paired with a smartphone, the IconX will be able to stream audio and also answer calls. The earbuds themselves have a capacitive button for controlling the music.

Samsung will be shipping the Gear IconX earbuds with a carrying case that also acts as the charging cradle which has a built-in 315mAh battery for charging on the go. According to The Verge, the Gear IconX will only have a 3 hour battery life when it is a standalone device and that number goes down to about 90 minutes when connected to a smartphone.

The Gear IconX will be available for purchase by Q3 2016 for an MSRP of US$ 199 (~MYR 825).

Samsung hasn't released a wearable in a long time. The last one they announced was the Gear S2 and that was during IFA 2015. But it looks like Samsung is back with their 2nd generation Gear Fit which now comes with a sleeker design in addition to the new GPS functionality that Samsung has baked into the device.

Samsung Gear Fit 2 Key Specifications

— 1.5-inch 216 x 432 resolution Curved Super AMOLED display
— Dual Core 1GHz processor
— 512MB RAM
— 4GB memory
— Bluetooth 4.2
— 200mAh battery

The Gear Fit 2 will be compatible with Android devices running Android 4.4 above with at least 1.5GB of RAM.
