After much controversy in the last couple of weeks. Today, Maxis is officially responding to all the comments that have been made on the internet with their new MaxisONE plan which comes with a crucial new feature called the DataPool which enables users to share data with others. This new feature builds upon the revised MaxisONE plans which now comes standard with 5GB of data and goes up to 20GB. (ie. MaxisONE users which previously had 1GB of data will not receive 5GB of data and the 7GB plan will now get 20GB of data.

On top of all that extra data, Maxis is also sweetening up their MaxisONE plans with a new roaming option that enable subscribers to utilize their massive pool (no pun intended) of data and also calls and SMS while overseas. A daily roaming charge of RM 38 is imposed but Maxis is recuperating that charge with an additional 500MB of quota.

Additionally, Maxis is also throwing in 5GB of data alongside the upgraded quota for users to stream videos through services like iFlix or Viu.

That is basically it, the new MaxisONE plans are not just as competitive as what the competition has to offer and by tomorrow (April 23) all existing MaxisONE customers will begin to see the increased data cap that these new plans will offer and Maxis assures that the upgraded quota is not a 'limited offer' rather, the quota is yours for life. The telco company notes that over 1 million MaxisONE subscribers will benefit from the upgraded plans and new customers can also enjoy better rates compared to the competition. But this looks to be the start, expect to see Maxis revise their other offerings in the near future.

The prepaid category in Malaysia has evolved drastically in 2015. From the fiasco which increased the price of reload coupons by 6% to both UMobile and Celcom unveiling new prepaid plans designed to bring more internet value to everyone. Well, today Hotlink (Maxis) is taking wraps off their brand new prepaid plan which is designed to take advantage of Maxis's quot on quote No.1 4G LTE Network.

Not to be outdone by UMobile's Power Prepaid Pack which comes with and extra 1GB of internet for life, Hotlink's new Hotlink FAST prepaid plan comes with a balance of both the conventional 3G speeds and also a piece of 4G LTE internet with the new Hotlink FAST plan. This means that you will have two different kinds of quota and how all this works is that the 4G data will be activated when you are inside Maxis's 4G LTE coverage (60% across Malaysia) and 3G data will resume when there's no 4G LTE coverage.

This quota is a little contradicting as the Hotlink website says that the 4G LTE quota can only be used on a 4G LTE network. So, does this mean that you lose half of the advertised quota is you do not use a 4G LTE enabled phone?

Nevertheless, if you do run out of internet quota within the validity period, you can top up 150MB, 500MB or 1GB of data for RM3, RM 8 and RM 12 respectively. Also, once the quota is reached, internet will stop it's service and unlike the plans with UMobile and Celcom, Hotlink's FAST prepaid plan does not come with unlimited 64kbps internet.

Hotlink FAST Prepaid

  • Preloaded credit: RM 5
  • Preloaded data: 300MB
  • Initial validity: 5 days
  • Calls/(Activ10): 24sen/min (12sen/min)
  • SMS/(Activ10): 12sen/SMS (1sen/SMS)

The new Hotlink FAST prepaid pack can now be purchased from stores nationwide for only RM 15 and existing customers can opt into this new plan either through the Hotlink RED app or by dialing *100*6*1#. To learn more about Hotlink FAST, head on over to www.hotlink.com.my.

OnePlus, the company behind the #FlagshipKiller line of devices recently unveiled a premium android smartphone that trades of futuristic improvements for style. Dubbed the OnePlus X, the device has since then been made available in countries like the US and India but can only be purchased with the invite system (for the first 30 days only).

Well, earlier this year local telco company Maxis announced a partnership between OnePlus to officially sell the OnePlus One in Malaysia and since then, Maxis also started offering the newer OnePlus 2 to their customers. But it looks like Maxis will not be the only one selling OnePlus devices in Malaysia (officially that is) as Brightstar which also the official distributor of Motorola devices in Malaysia has opened up a Pre-order page through Lazada for the #PowerfullyBeautiful OnePlus X.

As for the price, Brightstar is pricing the OnePlus X a little higher compared to the RRP from OnePlus which is just US$ 249 (or about MYR 1,048 with today's exchange rate). For RM 1,288 you will be getting the premium metal and glass design paired with an older Snapdragon 801 CPU with a 5" 1080P display, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable memory, a 13MP rear camera, an 8MP fron camera and a 2,525mAh battery.

The specifications themselves don't match up to the flagship killer standards that the company is used to but as I mentioned earlier, the OnePlus X is designed to be a device that flaunts it's looks rather than it's brains. Also, unlike the OnePlus 2, this device uses a standard microUSB port for charging and it also comes with a microSD card slot which doubles as a second nano SIM card slot.

You can now start Pre-ordering the OnePlus X through the official listing on Lazada for RM 1,288 which includes a free protective case and orders are expected to arrive next Friday (December 4) and No, you do not need a invite to buy the OnePlus X in Malaysia but we are unsure whether is this listing based on a limited stock or not

Just last month OnePlus announced the successor to their first flagship killer called the OnePlus 2. While the device has already started to ship to other countries, we're yet to see the device make it to Asia officially. Well the wait is nearly over as a little while back we heard that Maxis will be carrying the new OnePlus 2 and the day has somewhat arrived.

The teclo is now opening up registrations to get an invite to purchase the OnePlus 2 in Malaysia. Yes, OnePlus is still on with the invite system in order to purchase their new 2016 Flagship Killer. All you have to do is fill in your details like you name, IC no., telephone number and email and you're instantly in the running to earn yourself the privilege to buy the OnePlus 2 in Malaysia

Maxis's exclusivity of the OnePlus 2 in Malaysia goes back to earlier this year when OnePlus announced the first partnership with a mobile carrier company giving undivided access to the outgoing OnePlus One for Malaysian customers.

To recap, the OnePlus 2 comes with the same 5.5" 1080P display like before but OnePlus managed to slip the hardware into a slightly compact body. Powering this new Flagship Killer is Qualcomm's flagship Snadragon 810 CPU, 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 16/64GB of internal storage, a 3,300mAh non-removable battery, a new and improved 13MP rear camera, and a USB Type-C connector to round things out.

While Maxis will indeed be handing out invites through this registration, there's no word as to how much will the OnePlus 2 cost in Malaysia and when will customers will be able to purchase it. Doing a little currency exchange, the 16GB OnePlus 2 should cost around RM 1,339 ($329) and about RM 1,583 ($389) for the 64GB model. Give or take, the prices of the OnePlus 2 should be something like this.

Over the last few weeks, we have seen quite a lot of reports, leaks and rumors on Samsung's upcoming phablet and today we're just a week away from the official launch event which is happening in NYC on August 13. While the internet is pretty confident about the look and feel of the Galaxy Note 5 which looks a lot like a bigger Galaxy S6 with an S Pen, there's no actual release date yet.

There has been reports that Samsung plans to roll out the Galaxy Note 5 into major markets the week after it's formal launch and we're yet to confirm that fact. But here in Malaysia, Samsung devices usually come in pretty fast (unlike the iPhone) and this year is no difference as an internal source has just revealed that the Galaxy Note will be making it's way to Malaysia by the first week of September.

This report is pretty plausible as the device itself has already been certified through SIRIM as noted by Mdroid. While there's no concrete data on this report, the source mentioned that Digi, Celcom and Maxis are already gearing up to offer the Galaxy Note 5 by September 5. Whether this ends up being true or not, we'll just have to wait for the unpacked event next week.

As for the expected price of the Galaxy Note 5 in Malaysia, it should be around the RM 2,999 ball park.

Just this morning OnePlus made the OnePlus 2 official and while they didn't specifically mention any Asian countries in the first wave of shipment, it looks like we have some confirmation now. Initially, OnePlus said during the launch that the OnePlus 2 will begin shipping to the US, India and Europe starting August 11 and Asia will get the device in Q4.

If you remembered, back in April Maxis got into an exclusive partnership with OnePlus to offer the OnePlus One on contract, on demand. Well, it looks like Maxis will again have an exclusive dibs in Malaysia as they are teasing on Twitter that they will start to offer the OnePlus 2 very soon. However, the sales of the OnePlus 2 in Malaysia will still be through the invite system.

  • 16GB OnePlus 2 - $329 (~RM 1,255)
  • 64GB OnePlus 2 - $389 (~RM 1,483)

Probable fact is that Maxis ONE customers will get an upper hand in this exclusive offer. It shouldn't be long before we get more info on this offer. In the mean time, check out our OnePlus 2 article to learn more about the $329 2016 Flagship Killer

In a surprise move today, Maxis have started advertising a new plan for their Maxis Fibre Internet service for home users. Yes, you read it correctly, Maxis will be offering the everyday user 100Mbps of fibre optic internet. For only RM 398 a month, you can enjoy high speed internet from your house and if you are a MaxisONE customer, then you will pay a little less for that high speed internet (RM 330).

Of course, technology is advancing and online content is rapidly improving with 4K video being widespread through popular video sharing sites like YouTube. But whether is it necessary to get 100Mbps is for an average household is yet to be known as current tiers already perform excellently in streaming high resolution media through the internet.

Check out the price breakdown for the various plans below which also includes special prices for MaxisONE customers. Do note that these plans do NOT include GST (6%), so you do the math the add the extra tax. Also, by subscribing to any one of Maxis's Fibre Internet plan, you will have to commit to it for 24 months

Well, technically Maxis is still running off TM's network to give customers Fibre Internet and it shouldn't be long before UniFi also gets a 100Mbps plan. So, will you be upgrading soon?

The competition between the telcos have been strong this year and just recently Celcom unveiled their Magic SIM pack which we have reviewed and Umobile has revised their UMI prepaid plans to give users more. The next big step is to induce competition in the postpaid space and both Celcom, Digi and Maxis have already updated their sub-50 postpaid data plans to include better offers, you can check out this comparison by Lowyat.NET

Well, UMobile made a big jump today by revising a couple of their postpaid plans and probably the most significant change was to their U28 plan which has tripled in data size. From the previous 1GB of data which was being offered with the plan, for a limited time UMobile will be giving users the chance to get 3GB of data for life.

Which means, even once the promotion period, you will still get to keep that massive 3GB data plan for just RM 28 a month. Also, the U28 postpaid plan now comes with free 50 voice minutes to all networks that unlike free calls to UMobile numbers will not be brought forward to the preceding month.

As for other postpaid plans, UMobile has also generously increased the data quota and like the U28 plan, customers will get to keep that upgraded data limit if they subscribe to the plan during the promo period. Speaking of the promo period, this offer will be valid through 31 August 2015 and basically UMobile is trying to get new customers with this new promo and i'm not surprised if other telcos counter-attack UMobile's promotion in the coming weeks.

Before i forget, yes! existing postpaid customers will be upgraded to the new and improved plans which includes more data. When i received a message from UMobile this morning about the upgrade, i thought i was special that's why the gave me extra 2GB of data. Well, it turns out, the offer is valid for other postpaid users too.

Just last week we saw reports that Maxis is gearing up to offer the OnePlus One in Malaysia. As it turns out, the deal between Maxis and OnePlus is the company's first deal between a mobile carrier. OnePlus claims that the overwhelming response from fans in Malaysia inked the deal between Maxis to exclusively offer the OnePlus One in Malaysia without going through the invite system.

This comes just after OnePlus announces that the OnePlus One is officially jumping off the awful invite system in the countries which the company is offering the device. Well, they did also mention that although the invite system is gone for now, their next flagship device will see the return of the invite system.

Maxis's collaboration with OnePlus means that customers will be able to purchase the OnePlus One directly from Maxis either with a Maxis One plan or totally contract free. Besides that, OnePlus will also be offering customers a 1 year local warranty with the device.

Starting today (22 April) customers will be able to buy the OnePlus One from Maxis's online store and in-store purchases will be available in mid-may. The 64GB OnePlus One is priced in at RM 859 with a Maxis One plan and RM 1199 to buy the device outright without a contract

Just about a year ago, the internet was flooded with the tagline "flagship killer" and on April 25 2014, the OnePlus One officially went on sale. But the catch is you'll need to get yourself an invite to purchase the One. One year later, the invite system is still there but more widely available.

Well today, Maxis officially confirms they will be exclusively carrying the OnePlus One in Malaysia. This comes after the fan meetup they held earlier this year in which fans got the chance to try out the device personally.

>>> OnePlus One Malaysia launch countdown

If you're not familiar with the OnePlus, it is formed in 2013 by Oppo's ex-chairman and currently they only have one smartphone in their product line. The OnePlus One has been quite a success to the company as they managed to sell more than 500,000 units even with the ever so selective invite system.

But what's unique about the OnePlus One is that it runs CyanogenMod out of the box but since then both companies have had their differences and just this week, OnePlus released Oxygen OS which is the official OS for the device.

Under the hood, the OnePlus One features a Snapdragon 801 CPU, a 5.5" 1080P display which was quite respectable when it came out last year. On the back, the device features a 13MP camera capable of 4K video, a 5MP front facing camera and 32GB and 64GB storage options.

From the looks of the poster above, the OnePlus One's RRP is 1,299 and Maxis plans to offer it for only RM 959 with a MaxisONE package. and No, you don't need to have an invite to purchase this device from Maxis.

Is it worth the money, well i don't think so. Given that there are rising rumors of two new OnePlus devices in the pipeline, i would highly recommend you to give it a little wait for a better offer.

umobile-prepaid-card-with-gst

All this week the hot topic was all about the arrival of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge in Malaysia implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in Malaysia. GST has already caused customers to flip tables over the price hike of smartphones and electronic devices.

GST on Prepaid reload cards?

The thing about GST is that customers are still unsure of what is supposed to be exempted from GST and everyone is still trying to take in that prices for certain products have evidently increased. Well, an ongoing debate this week is the exemption of GST for prepaid reload cards.

When GST started on April 1st, one of the first complaints to grabbed a mass audience is the increased price for a prepaid Top Up card which does include the 6% GST charges on top of the value of the Top Up card. A few hours after that, MCMC came up and said that telecos should not charge customers with GST for Top Up cards.

"prices advertised should be inclusive of GST"
After that concluded, MCMC said that customers who purchased the Top Up card with GST included will be able to claim back the included GST they paid from the store they purchased the Top Up card from.

This then continued on with the Communications and Multimedia Consumer Forum of Malaysia (CFM) running a full investigation and asking customer not to purchase reload cards until the problem is resolved. After some talks with teleco companies, they all agreed that GST will indeed be imposed to prepaid reload coupons but teleco companies will need to reimburse customers in forms of added text messages or voice minutes.

PRESS STATEMENT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THURSDAY 2 APRIL 2015

IMPLEMENTATION OF GST ON GOODS & SERVICES IN THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS SECTOR
Clarification On 6% GST For Prepaid Top Ups
KUALA LUMPUR – A meeting was held between the telco industry and the Customs Department today to clarify on GST implementation for prepaid services. During the meeting, the following was agreed:
1. Reload for prepaid is subjected to GST upon activation.
2. The value of the reload is identical to pre-GST, the only difference is that GST is added to the reload amount.
3. The industry is in compliance with the GST Act 2014, and therefore has added GST to the current value of reload (so for example, RM10 reload value will now cost RM10.60), which is agreeable to Customs since the underlying value of the reload is unchanged.
4. The industry agrees with Customs that many customers feel the burden of GST for some items, including prepaid. Therefore, as a transitional measure, the industry will give to all customers who reload RM5 and above a value which is higher than the GST addition, in forms of free minutes and SMS. For example, customers will get 5 voice minutes and 5 SMS for every top up of RM10. While for reloads of RM20, the customer will receive 10 voice minutes and 10 SMS. This will apply for three months, starting tomorrow, 3 April 2015.
5. The Customs and the industry will continue to work together on the implementation of GST.
Mobile communications services (excluding International Roaming) is a standard rated item under the GST Act 2014, and since mobile communications services are neither GST exempt nor zero rated items, the industry is required by law to charge 6% GST. International Roaming charges are zero rated.
The GST paid by customers will be collected by telcos and remitted to Customs, in accordance with the GST Law and guidelines for all goods and services consumed.

My opinion

Well, now on to my part of the story. Personally i am using retaining both a prepaid and postpaid account on UMobile which gives me a good perspective on the implementation of GST for prepaid users.

First off, something to note is that previously before GST came into action, the standard prepaid reload card is inclusive of the 6% Sales and Services Tax (SST). Technically speaking, SST does replace GST and the prices for the reload coupons should've remained unchanged after April 1st.

For UMobile, they made a very good choice in my opinion by reloading the exact amount (inclusive of GST) you paid for the Top Up card. So for say i bought an RM 30 Top Up card today, the credited amount in my account will be RM 31.80. This however will only hold true for UMobile and other telecos will provide different returns for the added 6%.

But, this only applies for UMobile and other teleco companies might reimburse their prepaid customers with extra airtime and messages. That for me is not so practical compared to directly crediting extra money to my account as i don't make much outgoing calls.

So, today i attempted to purchase a Top Up card from my favorite place but the cashier initially told me to get them somewhere else. Despite that i still insisted on buying the Top Up card there. Then i asked him about the sales of Top Up card for the past few days and he told me that i was the first person to buy the Top Up card from there this month and prior to my purchase he would ask others to get the Top Up card from somewhere else.

After all this, my conclusion is that the added 6% feels like a beat around the bush for customers. They will not only need to pay more than a single paper bill for their reload card now but also the added bonus due to GST will greatly depend on what the teleco company plans to give.

If UMobile was able to credit the exact RM 31.80 to my account for the RM 30 Top Up card, i don't see why they can't just retain the RM 30 flat price which is inclusive of GST. As i said earlier, the added GST towards prepaid Top Up cards is just making life that little harder for prepaid users.

Maybe if this price ends up staying for the long term, teleco companies should start considering revising the prices of their prepaid mobile plans. Anyways, below here are the prices of the reload Top Up cards inclusive of GST for your perusal.

Prepaid reload Top Up card prices with GST

  • RM 5 = RM 5.30
  • RM 10 = RM 10.60
  • RM 30 = RM 31.80
  • RM 50 = RM 53.00
  • RM 100 =  RM 106.00

So, all you eager fans will most likely be live at the venue to cheer on your team. With that, you will also want to capture and upload that moment when Lewis Hamilton takes the major lead in the race.

Well, Maxis is doing a big marketing push during the race by providing everyone present free Wi-Fi. The service will be available to just everyone there from 10am to 8pm daily. So, for the three days you can rely on Maxis's free wifi to share your moments during the F1 race on social media.

As to the speeds of the provided wi-fi networks, just hope that the volume of people there doesn't affect the overall speed of the network

Earlier in the year Maxis announced the availability of 4G on their network and soon after that they announced that the HTC One XL and Lumia 920 will be the first two officially supported devices. Fast forward to the present time, Maxis has recently announced that the iPhone 5, iPad mini and iPad 4 will support Maxis's 4G LTE. Customers with these devices can now activate the LTE with a simple settings toggle which you can learn more about here.

The time has finally come and Maxis has went ahead and revealed that their 4G LTE network is now live in certain areas. On their promo page they basically tell us that LTE can translate into super fast speeds. But there is still one problem about this is that currently in Malaysia only the iPhone 5 supports LTE natively so i am guessing that during the official launch maxis will be announcing a few LTE enabled device. The prices are as below, to find out more on this hit the source link below.

The iPhone 5 was officially up for sale at 9 major countries on Friday and we are still waiting for new when it will arrive in Malaysia. I am guessing that it will arrive at the earliest by the end of october. But if you are impatient and want the latest and greatest now you can head over to an Apple store in Singapore to get one. But there is one problem with that, you won't have the proper SIM card to put in the iPhone 5. As you all know the iPhone 5 uses the nano SIM card and you can't just cut the SIM to make it fit like most people do to get micro SIM cards.

This is because the nano SIM card is 15% thinner. But now Maxis has announced that they are the first carrier in Malaysia to provide the nano SIM cards. They said that the nano SIM cards will be available starting September 24 for RM25. Currently the nano SIM card is only available in the stores listed below but Maxis said that majority of their Maxis centres will be offering the nano SIM card by the end of September.
