Back in October, Huawei took the stage to reveal their new budget smartphone, the Honor 6X. The device has since then been available in countries like the US. But today, Honor Malaysia has announced that beginning this Friday, the Honor 6X will be available for the Malaysian market.

The Honor 6X which is the successor to last year's Honor 5X now comes with a dual camera array on the rear to create sharper, crisper and more detailed photos. Huawei also bumped up the battery capacity and promises that users can expect up to 2 days of battery life.

As mentioned earlier, the Honor 6X will be available in Malaysia beginning this Friday (February 17) but the company is accepting pre-orders from today till February 16 through DirectD's Lazada's storefront. The first 50 users to pre-order the Honor 6X will receive freebies worth over RM100.

Besides the Xiaomi Mi 5, the OnePlus 3 is the best affordable flagship phone of 2016. The phone which was announced back in June is OnePlus' third flagship smartphone offering and the company has opted for a new unibody aluminium chassis this year and the OnePlus 3 brings in improvements like a proprietary fast charging technology that prevents overheating.

OnePlus 3 Key Specifications

— 5.5-inch 1080P Optic AMOLED display
— Snapdragon 820 SoC
— 6GB RAM
— 64 UFS 2.0 memory
— 16MP f2.0 rear camera with OIS
— 8MP f2.0 front camera
— Android 6.0 Marshmallow w/OxygenOS
— 3,00mAh battery
— USB Type-C port
— 152.7 x 74.7 x 7.35mm
— 158g
— Dual SIM LTE
— Graphite grey/Gold

Probably the biggest thing about the OnePlus 3 is that the phone can be bought without an invite, something that had plagued the sales of the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2. But in order to buy it, the OnePlus 3 will still need to be available in your country and in Malaysia, the OnePlus 3 is about to be available as suggested by a Lazada product listing.

Unlike last year with the OnePlus 2, OnePlus isn't partnering with Maxis to officially launch the OnePlus 3 in Malaysia. Rather, the OnePlus 3 is going to be a Lazada exclusive. We're not sure what this exclusivity means but more information should begin trickling out once the device officially arrives on August 9.

Right now, Lazada has opened up a Pre-order page and the OnePlus 3 will be officially priced at RM 1,888 in Malaysia. The OnePlus 3 is sold and fulfilled by Lazada and orders will begin shipping on August 9th

Lazada has been getting exclusive products lately and we can now add another product to that list. The 2nd generation Chromecast released late last year is now officially available in Malaysia and Lazada is the exclusive distributor of both the 2015 Chromecast and Chromecast Audio. Both devices are priced at RM 199 and while it is a little bit more than the US$ 35 (~MYR 142) price, Lazada is throwing in a 12 month subscription of iflix worth RM 96. There's also a 1 year warranty.

In case you don't know what the Chromecast is, it is basically a dongle that enables you to stream media to your TV through the Google Cast app. It's also cool to know that the Google Home hub that Google recently showed off during Google I/O is also based off the Chromecast technology.

The 2015 Chromecast is an improvement over the original Chromecast dongle and the new model features a simple design and new color options. Unfortunately, Lazada will only be offering the black Chromecast and Chromecast Audio in Malaysia because the yellow and red models are exclusive to the Google Store. You can learn about the improvements made to the new Chromecast in my recent review of the 2015 Chromecast here

Microsoft might have begin rolling out the Windows 10 Mobile update to existing Lumia devices but if you want a phone designed for Windows 10 Mobile, the new Lumia 650 might be the one you're looking for. Announced back in February, the Microsoft Lumia 650 is comparatively more sleeker than both the Lumia 950 and Lumia 550 due to it's use of an aluminium frame.

Lumia 650 Key Specifications:

  • 5-inch 720P AMOLED display
  • Snapdragon 212 SoC
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 8MP f2.2 rear camera
  • 5MP front camera
  • 16GB expandable memory
  • 2,000mAh battery
  • LTE
  • 142 x 70.9 x 6.9mm

Besides the sub-premium design and Windows 10 Mobile out of the box, the new Lumia 650 also comes with things like expandable storage, LTE support, an OLED display and many more. Microsoft Malaysia will begin offering the Lumia 650 in stores nationwide starting next Friday (April 8) for RM 899 and customers will also receive 13,000 AirAsia BIG points alongside their purchase.

Additionally, the Lumia 650 is also up for pre-order right now on Lazada for the same price and the first 150 customers will get 13,899 AirAsia BIG points and a RM 25 Lazada voucher. But the weird thing is that the site lists that the ETA for the device is set at 11th April which is a couple days after the retail availability.

On October, Microsoft unveiled the new Surface Pro 4 alongside new Windows 10 hardware like the Surface Book and Lumia 950 series in a special hardware event. Both devices have since then made it to Malaysia, the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 starts at RM 3,999 and the Lumia 950 series start at RM 2,699. Now this is where I come in, I have recently bought a Surface Pro 4 here in Malaysia and my experience is not as simple as driving to Digital Mall and picking it up.

So, this adventure starts in late October when news broke out that Microsoft is opening up pre orders for the Surface Pro 4 on Lazada through the official Microsoft Store. At that time, only the black and blue type cover was available as an add on and I wanted the new teal color so I did not bother to pre order the device first as there was no bundle pricing, just a free tablet sleeve.

As it turns out, Microsoft Malaysia is only making two type cover colors available at launched opposed to having the full set available which also includes the teal, light blue and red Type Cover. Then the Surface Pro 4 was officially launched in Malaysia on November 19th and I went down to the IT store nearby to take a look at the device and I was somewhat convinced that the blue type cover was good enough in terms of looks.

The following week, I decided to buy the Surface Pro 4 through the Microsoft Authorized Seller on Lazada because they were accepting payments through a credit card without an extra charge. But little did I know that this is going to end up being a disaster. I ordered the device on Friday and through the email confirmation, the Surface Pro 4 and Type cover was supposedly arriving by the end of the following week. On Wednesday, the Type Cover arrived in the mail but I waited till Friday and there was still no sign of the tablet itself.

I have purchased through Lazada before and I know that they have a habit of sending text message notifications when the package is being dispatched but for this order, I did not receive a message beforehand. By then, It was around 11 (going to 12) and usually the courier will come by that time. So, finally, I decided to place a call to Lazada's customer service to enquire about the status of my order.

The first call that I placed went through pretty quickly and the rep on the line told me that he will follow up on my case in a forthcoming email. The email arrived a few minutes later and he basically asked whether the product that I bought is a pre-order device. I promptly replied to him by saying No, of course not. What kind of question is that, you should know that its not a pre order device in the first place. After that, I went out to get lunch and I was expecting another reply from them regarding my case but nothing popped up on my email.

After lunch around 1:30, I placed a second call to customer Lazada's customer service to enquire about the status of my order. I provided them with my order number and moments later, the person on the other side told me that the supplier of Microsoft Authorized Seller on Lazada (which is TMT Online) has recently contacted them that the product is currently out of stock and will require me to wait for about 2 weeks. At that moment, I was somewhat furious because not only did they not inform me about this matter earlier and the fact that the person on the line told me that the supplier knew they had no stock on Saturday.

The receipt that came with the Type Cover came in handy as the Microsoft Authorized Seller on Lazada is actually served by local IT store Thunder Match Technology. So, I called them up and asked about the situation with the Surface Pro 4 and the story adds up with what Lazada told me earlier and at that point I said ok, a 2 week wait doesn't sound too bad. There was some talk about the second batch of devices being held up in customs. I told off the customer service rep on the line saying that I was not informed about the matter and I had to make a few calls to understand the matter.

Feeling a little curious, I went down to Digital Mall the following day to inquire about the stock of the Surface Pro 4 in on of Thunder Match's retail outlets. Turns out that their retail outlet there still has stock of the Surface Pro 4 but it seems that their HQ has partitioned out some units to their own retail outlets. There is most likely some miscommunication between the Lazada and Thunder Match that caused the stock availability because when I checked out the Surface Pro 4 on Lazada, it was listed there that they have 8 more units in stock.

So, I waited for a few days and out of the blue, an email from Lazada came up saying that my order has been cancelled and that a refund towards my payment will be made in the next two days. This made me very even furious compared to what I was facing when they told me to wait for two weeks. It was an involuntary cancellation and I had no say in it. First they ask me to wait two weeks and then they cancel my order altogether.

So, here I am three weeks later, happily typing this article on my Surface Pro 4. Lazada's services are actually pretty good and I like the free shipping on most products but this experience gives me that will power not to recommend others to buy computers from Lazada as it might not sound that simple. Sure, you might save the extra processing fee for the credit card but you might face some problems with how I had with this supplier.

Well, that should be the end right? Nope, as it turns out the unit that I purchased from the All IT Hypermarket was defective. The left speaker was completely dead. I was busy installing all the Windows Updates on the first day and only yesterday that I noticed that the audio was a little odd while watching a YouTube video. After a closer inspection, I concluded that the left speaker is faulty.

So, today I went back to All It Hypermarket and explained the issue to the technical support counter. All went well and the tech support person agreed to replace the faulty unit with a new one. So, he brought in the Surface Pro 4 into the office to have it check out and 5 minutes later, the supervisor came out to say that they are unable to replace the unit and referred me to call Microsoft tech support and have them deal with my faulty left speaker.

At that time, I was a little impatient already as I know that the Microsoft Surface tech support will take at least 2 weeks to send me a replacement. I just could not do it because I'll be going overseas next week. So, I argued with him by saying that the wait time for Microsoft's support is just too long. I did add on other things like their 7 day exchange program and then finally after saying a mouthful, he decided to give me a replacement on the spot with one condition. If the next unit is also faulty, I will need to refer to Microsoft Surface tech support to get it resolved.

And this is the actual end of the story, at the moment I am still installing all the Windows updates while working on this article. Have you ever had such a buying experience, do share it with us in the comments section or email your experience to us at thetechtoday@outlook.com

Stay tuned for an upcoming article where I share my thoughts on replacing the Surface Pro 3's cracked screen. Not as problematic like my Surface Pro 4 purchase but it did take quite a while to get it fixed.

Insider Talk

This is the first article on the Malaysia site that I am introducing the insider talk segment, basically this last part is where I add in all the unrelated but marginally related info.

I actually tweeted my angriness on Twitter and Microsoft Malaysia replied to my tweet and asked me to send them an email regarding the issue. I did send them a very very long email but I have yet to receive a reply from them. Microsoft should totally look into this issue as looking forward, it looks like new Microsoft phones and tablets will be exclusively available through Lazada at launch given that both the Surface Pro 4 and Lumia 950 series started off on the online shopping site.

The last part of the article where I found out that the left speaker was dead actually happened while I was writing this article actually. Was all ready to publish it and then I noticed the problem. This is probably a lesson that I should appreciate stereo audio and that you should check out the speakers next time you're buying a laptop.

Earlier this week, Microsoft Lumia Malaysia opened up a competition to give out 20 passes to attend the Lumia 950 series launch party in Malaysia on December 15 and that competition is still ongoing. However, if you want to own the actual device and not just be the first one to try it out, Microsoft has just opened up the pre-order page for both the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL.

Just like the Surface Pro 4, Microsoft is once again giving exclusive first dibs to Lazada to sell the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. The listing itself is now live and if you have RM 2,700, you can now pre-order the 32GB Lumia 950 through Lazada and if you are the lucky enough to be the first 50 to pre-order the device, you will also get the Microsoft Display Dock worth RM 309 for free.

For a quick refresher, the Lumia 950 comes with a new 5.2" QHD display, a new 20MP Pureview camera and runs on Windows 10 Mobile. The RM 309 Microsoft Display Dock in the other hand is small cube that outputs various ports through the Lumia 950's USB Type-C port and is designed to take advantage of Continuum which is a Windows 10 Mobile feature that allows your Lumia 950 to be a desktop.

At the moment, the Lumia 950 priced at RM 2,700 can be pre-ordered through Lazada Malaysia but the bigger RM 3,000 5.7" Lumia 950 XL is still not available for pre-order at the time of writing. But either way, by pre-ordering the Lumia 950 XL, you will also get the Microsoft Display Dock if you are the first 50 to order the device.

After being shown off at MWC 2015; Today, Lenovo simultaneously launched the Lenovo A7000 in six Asean countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Philippines). At it's core, the Lenovo A7000 is marketed as a midrange device but the main selling point for this new handset for Lenovo is the Dolby Atmos audio.

Under the hood, there is a 1.5GHz octa core MediaTek CPU that features 8 Cortex-A53 cores and is paired up with 2GB of RAM. The Lenovo A7000 features a 5.5" 720P display. an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP fixed focus front facing camera, 32GB of expandable storage, a massive 2,900mAh removable battery and Android 5.0 Lollipop with the Lenovo Vibe skin.

Moving on to the star of the show, Dolby Atmos support which works a lot like how the Beats Audio used to work on HTC devices. That means that this is merely just a software enhancement through the built in Dolby Atmos application on the device.

If you're not familiar with Dolby Atmos, basically it's a film standard which rivals IMAX but the difference is that with Dolby Atmos, the sound is spread on over to 64 different speakers and thus creating a sound array which is theoretically better sounding than the conventional surround sound. You can try Dolby Atmos at select GSC theaters like at GSC 1 Utama or IOI City Mall, but on a side note, only select movies will be available in this rich audio format.

As for pricing, the Lenovo A7000 goes for RM 699 and ZDNET notes that Lenovo will be exclusively partnering with Lazada.com to sell the Lenovo A7000 for the first 6 weeks. Lazada however will start the first flash sale of the Lenovo A7000 next wednesday (20 May; 12PM) and on top of that, they'll be offering buyers a RM 20 discount on the already rebated price if you register for the flash sale today.

So, that'll be only RM 605 if you buy the Lenovo A7000 via Lazada next week. Lenovo says they will continue to restock the device for more flash sales in the coming weeks via Lazada and only in mid-June will they start offering the Lenovo A7000 at physical shops at the RM 699 price.

Register for the Lazadar Lenovo A7000 flash sale today and get a RM 20 rebate
