Huawei's new P9 and P9 Plus come with a pair of cameras certified by Leica
In the last couple of weeks companies like Samsung and LG have unveiled their new flagship offerings for 2016 but the craze does not stop there as other android makers like HTC, Asus and Oppo are about to chime in. Today in particular, Huawei unveiled their flagship series for 2016. The Huawei P9 is the spiritual successor to the well acclaimed Huawei P8 from last year. If you think the LG G5's dual camera setup was cool, Huawei's new P9 and P9 Plus flagship comes with dual 12MP cameras that are "co-engineered" by Leica (a well established German camera maker).
While the (visor) back of the Huawei P9 amd P9 Plus features that slick looking Leica branding (a first for a smartphone), Huawei says that the dual camera setup is like no other. One of the two 12MP sensors will capture images in RGB and the other in monochrome and the images are combined to produce an image with accurate color representation. Huawei says they have implemented a new hybrid autofocus system to aid in taking quick photos and also a dedicated processing unit to measure depth. This will probably help to get better dynamic range in photos. And the best part about the Huawei P9's dual camera system compared to the one LG (or Samsung) is that the camera sits flush on the metal frame (basically means no awkward camera bump)
The first thing that is quite obvious about the Huawei P9 and Huawei P9 Plus is that the front design is reminiscent of the Huawei P8 from last year and the rear design is similar of the Huawei Nexus 6P. But unlike other android flagship android phones of 2016, the Huawei P9 series is unique in the sense that it is not powered by the Snapdragon 820 (Huawei opted to use an in-house developed SoC) and the Chinese firm decided to put a 1080P display on both the devices to improve battery life.
Additionally, Huawei is also touting that their new flagship phone, the P9 also comes with unrivaled hardware performance in terms of battery life, USB Type-C with a proprietary fast charging technology, stereo speaker, industry leading connectivity with a virtual triple antenna implementation and security with a new three-dimension fingerprint sensor on the back. Just like the trend is these days, there's also a slightly bigger variant of the Huawei P9 called the Huawei P9 Plus and that comes with a slightly bigger 5.5-inch (still) 1080P AMOLED display that features a pressure sensitive display.
Huawei will begin rolling out the Huawe P9 and Huawei P9 Plus later this month in Europe and also China for a starting price of €599 (~RM 2,660) and €749 (~RM 3,300) respectively. Expect to see the Huawe P9 launch in Malaysia by the 2Q of 2016.
