Corning's 5th generation Gorilla Glass will survive drops up to 1.6 meters
It's been a while since Corning updated their cover glass technology but today the glass company is showing off their next generation Gorilla Glass 5 which will be on devices as early as later this year. But unlike previous generations, Corning is not focusing on making their Gorilla Glass thinner and lighter rather they are solving the problem of accidental drops with Gorilla Glass 5.
According to Corning, Gorilla Glass 5 will survive 4 out of 5 face-down drops from 1.6 meters. That also means that you can expect to see less screen cracks in newer devices especially given the trend of dual glass designs from Samsung, Xiaomi and Huawei. How does this actually stack up in real world performance? We'll have to wait for new devices to see how Gorilla Glass 5 fairs in the real world.
