LG has successfully embedded a fingerprint scanner into a cover glass
During Mobile World Congress 2016, LG unveiled their new flagship, the G5 which included the semi modular system that allows the base to be undocked to access the removable battery and swap it with different modules. While LG did opt for an aluminium build for the G5, another major difference between the LG G5 compared to the older LG G2, LG G3 and LG G4 is that the iconic rear mounted volume rocker has been moved to the sides. The back however still has the power button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner.
But it looks like LG might very well go back to that iconic button placement for their next major smartphone as their subsidiary, LG Innotek has just announced a new breakthrough which is a fingerprint sensor module that is embedded directly into the cover glass. Despite having an embedded fingerprint scanner without any physical buttons, this new cover glass will retain the durability of a standard cover glass.
